Working from Home with the Poly Plantronics Voyager 5200: A Remote Worker’s Review

2024-05-28

The transition to working from home has been an adjustment for many, and finding the right equipment to optimize your workspace is crucial. For me, a key element was a reliable Bluetooth headset. After months of research I opted for the Poly Plantronics Voyager 5200. Here’s a detailed breakdown of my experience using it specifically in a home office environment.

Setting Up and First Impressions

The Voyager 5200 arrived in a sleek, compact box containing the headset itself, a charging case, a couple of ear tips in different sizes, and a USB-C charging cable. The headset itself is lightweight and feels comfortable in your hand. The design is minimalist, with a black, curved earpiece and a small control panel that sits discreetly behind your ear. Pairing it with my laptop was a breeze โ€“ it connected instantly via Bluetooth and the process was intuitive.

Sound Quality: Crystal Clear Calls and Surprisingly Good Audio

One of the biggest concerns I had with a single-ear headset was sound quality for calls. Let me assure you, the Voyager 5200 delivers. The four-microphone noise-canceling system is exceptional. Background noise like chatter from family members or the rumble of the washing machine completely faded away during calls. My voice was consistently picked up clearly, even on days when the mailman decided to have a shouting match with a neighbor’s dog.

On the receiving end, audio was equally impressive. Voices came through crisp and natural, and I could easily understand colleagues on calls that lasted for hours. I wasn’t expecting much in terms of music or media consumption with a single earpiece, but I was pleasantly surprised. The Voyager 5200 does a commendable job of delivering rich, balanced audio for listening to podcasts or audiobooks while working. It won’t replace your high-fidelity headphones, but it’s definitely passable for casual listening.

Comfort and Battery Life: A Balancing Act

Comfort is subjective, but I found the Voyager 5200 to be generally comfortable for extended periods. The included ear tips come in a few sizes, and finding the right fit is key to achieving a secure and comfortable position. However, after a few hours of wear, I did experience some mild fatigue around my ear, likely from the pressure of the earpiece. Taking short breaks helped alleviate this.

Battery life is another area where there’s a trade-off. The headset itself boasts a respectable six hours of talk time on a single charge, which is enough for most workdays. The charging case provides an additional 14 hours, bringing the total usable time to a very decent 20 hours. However, the charging case itself is a bit bulky and feels a little cheap compared to the overall quality of the headset.

Special Features: A Mixed Bag

The Voyager 5200 boasts a few additional features that are worth mentioning. A dedicated button on the control panel allows you to activate your smartphone’s virtual assistant (Siri, Google Assistant etc.), which is a handy perk for hands-free control. The headset also announces the names of incoming callers, and you can even answer or ignore calls with your voice commands โ€“ although I found this feature to be a bit finicky and not always reliable.

Three Pros and Three Cons: Weighing the Options

Pros:

  • Superb Call Quality: The noise-canceling microphone ensures crystal-clear calls, even in noisy environments.
  • Surprisingly Good Audio: While not designed for audiophiles, the Voyager 5200 delivers surprisingly good sound for listening to podcasts or audiobooks.
  • Long Battery Life: With a combined 20 hours of usable time between the headset and charging case, you won’t have to worry about running out of juice in the middle of the workday.

Cons:

  • Comfort for Extended Use: The single-ear design can lead to some fatigue around the ear after a few hours of wear.
  • Bulky Charging Case: The charging case feels a bit bulky and cheap compared to the overall quality of the headset.
  • Unreliable Voice Controls: The voice controls for answering and ignoring calls were not always responsive.

Conclusion: A Worthy Investment for Most Home Offices

After several months of using the Poly Plantronics Voyager 5200 in my home office, I can confidently recommend it to most remote workers. The exceptional call quality and surprisingly good audio make it a great choice for communication and light entertainment. The long battery life ensures you won’t be scrambling for a charger throughout the day. While comfort for extended wear and some of the voice controls could be improved, these drawbacks are outweighed by the headset’s strengths. If you’re looking for a reliable, high-performing headset the Poly Plantronics Voyager 5200 would make a great choice.

A Minimalist’s Dream: A Review of the Arteck Ultra-Slim Bluetooth Keyboard

2024-05-21

arteck ultra slim bluetooth keyboard review closeup view showing available black or white colors

As someone who constantly battles desk space real estate, the Arteck Ultra-Slim Bluetooth Keyboard has been a revelation. It’s the Marie Kondo of keyboards โ€“ sleek, functional, and taking up minimal space. But like any relationship, it’s not without its quirks. Here’s a breakdown of my experience with this ultra-thin offering from Arteck.

arteck ultra slim bluetooth keyboard review main view in black

Three Things I Love About the Arteck Ultra-Slim

  • Super Slim and Lightweight: The Arteck Ultra-Slim keyboard is shockingly thin. Most of the unit is under a quarter of an inch thick, so it feels more like a notepad than a traditional keyboard. The rear section of the Arteck Ultra-Slim is about three times the thickness as it contains the battery compartment which doubles as a prop to give the keyboard a slight angle which improves the comfort level while typing. This makes it incredibly portable and perfect for tossing into a bag or backpack without feeling weighed down. Paired with its light weight, it’s become my go-to keyboard for coffee shop writing sessions or working on the go.
  • Clean and Minimalist Design: I’m a sucker for clean aesthetics, and the Arteck Ultra-Slim delivers. It is available in either black or white and is both stylish and feels very premium. The keys themselves are low-profile and chiclet-style, which some may find odd at first, but I grew accustomed to them quickly. They offer a satisfyingly quiet typing experience, which is a major plus for anyone who shares their workspace with others (or who likes to write in complete silence).
  • Fast and Easy Device Pairing: One of the features I find most useful is the ability to effortlessly switch between my laptop, tablet, and even my phone with ease. This makes it a dream for someone who juggles multiple devices throughout the day, like myself.

Three Things to Consider before Buying the Arteck Ultra-Slim

  • Getting Used to the Low-Profile Keys: As mentioned before, the low-profile chiclet-style keys might take some getting used to for those accustomed to a more traditional keyboard. The key travel is minimal, and some users might find it lacks the satisfying clickiness of a mechanical keyboard. For me, it took a few days to adjust, but now I barely notice the difference.
  • Limited Functionality Keys: The Arteck Ultra-Slim keeps a very minimalist profile, and this sometimes comes at the cost of functionality. While the basic function keys (volume control, brightness, etc.) are present, some additional controls require using the Fn key combination, which can slow down workflow. For instance, there’s no dedicated key for functions like Delete or Home, which can be a minor annoyance.
  • Battery Life Could Be Better for a Non-Rechargeable Device: While Arteck advertises a long battery life, they advertise an energy-saving design with automatic sleep mode allowing up to 4 months between battery changes (based on 2 hours’ non-stop use per day), my experience has been mixed. The unit ships with the required 2 AAA batteries that lasted pretty well, but sometimes the replacement batteries I’ve used, like the Energizer Max Alkaline or the Amazon Basics Alkaline High-Performance, I’ve needed to swap the batteries more often than I’d like, especially with extended use times. It’s not a dealbreaker, but it is something to keep in mind, especially for those who travel frequently.

The Verdict: A Keyboard for the Minimalist on the Move

Overall, the Arteck Ultra-Slim Bluetooth Keyboard is a great option for minimalists and those who prioritize portability. Its sleek design, lightweight build, and multi-device pairing make it a perfect companion for those who work from coffee shops or travel frequently. However, those who prefer a more traditional typing experience with dedicated function keys and a bit more key travel might want to look elsewhere.

For me, the pros outweigh the cons. The portability and ability to switch seamlessly between devices make it a perfect fit for my work style. While I would love a slightly longer battery life and some dedicated function keys, the overall design and functionality win me over. If you’re looking for a slim, stylish, and portable keyboard that won’t weigh you down, then the Arteck Ultra-Slim Bluetooth Keyboard is definitely worth considering.

A Musician’s Journey with the Beats Studio Pro: An In-Depth Review

2024-04-30

beats studio pro review wireless bluetooth headset showing woman wearing white version

As a musician, my ears are my livelihood. Whether I’m composing at my home studio, tracking in the booth, or DJing a crowded club, the quality of my headphones directly impacts my creative process and performance. That’s why I was particularly excited to get my hands on the Beats Studio Pro wireless headphones. Here’s a detailed breakdown of my experience with them, covering everything from sound quality and noise cancellation to comfort, design, and features.

beats studio pro review wireless bluetooth headset showing product with included case and cable accessories

First Impressions: Unboxing and Design

The Beats Studio Pro arrived in a sleek, black box with the signature Beats logo. Unboxing it felt like a premium experience. The headphones themselves boast a modern, stylish design. The build quality feels sturdy, with a mix of metal and matte plastic. The headband is well-padded and adjustable, ensuring a comfortable fit for various head sizes.

However, the ear cups, while generously sized, felt a tad small on my ears. This wasn’t a dealbreaker, but it’s worth considering if you have large ears. They might feel snug after extended use.

Taking Flight: Sound Quality and Performance

Let’s get to the heart of the matter: how do these headphones sound? In a word, phenomenal. The custom acoustic platform delivers powerful, balanced sound with crisp highs, clear mids, and a satisfyingly deep bass. The bass response is present without being overpowering, which is crucial for bass-heavy genres like electronic music.

One of the most impressive features is the Active Noise Cancelling (ANC). It effectively blocks out external noise, creating a truly immersive listening experience. I found it particularly useful when tracking vocals in the studio, eliminating ambient noise and allowing me to focus solely on the performance. The Transparency mode, which lets in external sounds, is also a welcome addition. It’s perfect for situations where you need to be aware of your surroundings, like walking on a busy street.

A Match Made in Audio Heaven: Pairing with Devices

The Beats Studio Pro seamlessly connects to Apple devices via Apple’s W1 chip. Pairing with my iPhone and Macbook was a breeze. However, the headphones also offer multi-point Bluetooth connectivity, allowing them to connect to two devices simultaneously. This is a fantastic feature for someone who constantly switches between their phone and laptop.

The included USB-C cable allows for wired listening and lossless audio playback. This is a big plus for audiophiles who prioritize the purest sound quality. Additionally, the headphones support Siri for voice commands, making it convenient to control music playback and access other phone functions.

Putting Them to the Test: Battery Life and Durability

Beats advertises a battery life of up to 40 hours with ANC turned off. In my experience, it fell slightly short of that mark, lasting closer to 35 hours on a single charge. However, this is still excellent for extended listening sessions. The quick charging feature is also a lifesaver, providing up to three hours of playback with just a 10-minute charge.

As for durability, the headphones seem well-built. They’ve survived being tossed in my gig bag and endured the occasional accidental bump. The carrying case that comes included is a nice touch, offering protection during transport.

Beyond the Music: Calls and Gaming

While primarily a music lover’s tool, the Beats Studio Pro also handles calls surprisingly well. The built-in microphone delivers clear audio, making phone conversations a breeze. The noise cancellation also comes in handy here, ensuring your voice is heard clearly even in noisy environments.

For gamers, the low latency performance is a plus. There’s minimal audio delay, ensuring sound effects and in-game audio stay in sync with the action on screen.4

The Verdict: A Worthy Investment for Discerning Listeners

Overall, the Beats Studio Pro wireless headphones have exceeded my expectations. They deliver superb sound quality, effective noise cancellation, and a comfortable (if slightly snug for large ears) design. The long battery life, multi-point connectivity, and built-in microphone make them a versatile option for musicians, producers, and audiophiles alike.

While the price point might be a consideration, the combination of features and overall quality makes them a worthwhile investment for anyone serious about their audio experience. If you’re a musician, producer, DJ, or anyone who demands the best possible sound from your headphones, the Beats Studio Pro is definitely worth considering.

Here’s a quick summary of the pros and cons to help you decide:

  • Excellent sound quality with balanced audio and powerful bass
  • Effective active noise cancellation and transparency mode
  • Comfortable and stylish design (although the ear cups might feel snug on large ears)
  • Long battery life with quick charging capabilities
  • Multi-point Bluetooth connectivity for seamless pairing with two devices
  • Built-in microphone with clear sound

My Daily Commute Just Got a Whole Lot Louder (and Better) with the Occiam T19 Earbuds

2024-04-16

woman wearing occam t19 headset enjoying outdoors occiam t19 bluetooth wireless headset earbuds review

As a dedicated commuter, I rely on public transportation to get me around the bustling city. Between the crowded trains and the symphony of honking horns, it can be hard to find a moment of peace โ€“ or hear my own music. That’s why I was excited to try the occiam T19 Bluetooth earbuds. Here’s my experience after a month of using them on my daily rides.

occiam t19 bluetooth wireless headset earbuds review main product image with recharging case

Three Big Wins in Favor of the occiam T19 Bluetooth Headset:

Battery Life Champ: My biggest concern with wireless earbuds is always battery life. On a single charge, the occiam T19 Bluetooth Headset boasts a solid 8 hours of playtime, which is more than enough for my daily commute and even a bit extra for errands or phone calls. The charging case holds an additional 5 charges, bringing the total playtime to a whopping 90 hours. This means I can go days, sometimes even a whole week, between charges. No more scrambling for a cord before a big commute! Plus, the handy LED display on the case lets you know exactly how much juice is left, so you never get caught off guard.

Comfort for Crowded Commutes: The in-ear design of the T19s fits snugly without feeling uncomfortable, even after wearing them for extended periods. They come with three different sizes of ear tips, which is great because finding the right fit is crucial for both sound quality and staying power. The included ear hooks provide an extra level of security, which has been a lifesaver on those packed rush-hour trains. I no longer worry about an errant bump sending an earbud flying across the platform.

Sound Quality on the Go: Let’s talk about the most important part: the sound! The occiam T19 delivers rich, clear audio with surprisingly deep bass. Music sounds full and balanced, podcasts are crisp and easy to understand, and audiobooks are a pleasure to listen to. Even with the hustle and bustle of the city around me, I can get lost in my music or stay focused on an audiobook. The earbuds also have built-in microphones, and the call quality has been good on both ends during my commutes.

Three Things to Consider Before Buying the occiam T19:

Not the Most Stylish: While the occiam T19s are functional and comfortable, they aren’t exactly what I’d call sleek. The charging case is a bit bulky, and the earbuds themselves have a slightly generic look. If you’re looking for a pair of earbuds that will make a statement, these might not be the best choice.

Touch Controls Take Some Getting Used To: The occiam T19 uses touch controls for everything from playback to volume control to answering calls. While the touchpads are responsive, it took me a while to memorize all the different tap patterns. There’s a bit of a learning curve here, and I definitely fumbled a few times while trying to adjust the volume during my commute.

Not Completely Noise-Cancelling: The occiam T19 advertises an IPX7 waterproof rating, which is great for sweaty commutes or unexpected downpours. However, they don’t offer active noise cancellation (ANC). This means that while the snug fit helps block out some ambient noise, you’ll still hear the chatter and clatter of your surroundings. If you’re looking for complete noise cancellation for airplanes or super loud commutes, you might want to consider a different pair of earbuds.

The Final Verdict on the occiam T19:

Overall, the occiam T19 Bluetooth earbuds are a great choice for commuters like myself. The long battery life, comfortable fit, and clear sound quality make them a perfect companion for my daily rides. While they might not be the most stylish earbuds on the market, and the touch controls take some getting used to, the functionality and value for price are hard to beat. If you’re looking for a reliable pair of earbuds to help you conquer your commute, the Occiam T19s are definitely worth considering.

Running with Awareness: A Shokz OpenFit Review

2024-03-26

The Shokz OpenFit Bluetooth Headphones shown being worn by a young woman during exercise while they stay in place

As an avid runner and outdoor enthusiast, finding the perfect pair of headphones has always been a challenge for me. Traditional earbuds tend to fall out or cause discomfort during long runs, while over-ear headphones block out ambient sounds, which can be dangerous when running or cycling in traffic. However, my search for the ideal solution ended when I discovered the SHOKZ OpenFit – Open-Ear True Wireless Bluetooth Headphones. In this review, I’ll share my firsthand experience with these innovative headphones, highlighting their pros and cons.

Shows examples of the Shokz OpenFit Bluetooth Headphones available in black or beige

Pros – Everything I loved about the SHOKZ OpenFit Headphones:

  1. Unparalleled Comfort and Fit:
    • The unique open-ear design of the SHOKZ OpenFit headphones provides a level of comfort I’ve never experienced with other headphones. Rather than inserting earbuds into my ears or wearing bulky over-ear cups, these headphones rest gently on the sides of my head, leaving my ears completely open. This design eliminates any pressure points or discomfort, even during extended wear.
    • The headphones come with three sizes of silicone ear gels to ensure a customized fit for any ear shape. I appreciated this attention to detail, as it allowed me to find the perfect fit for maximum comfort and stability during my workouts.
  2. Exceptional Sound Quality:
    • Despite not directly covering the ears, the SHOKZ OpenFit headphones deliver impressive sound quality. The bone conduction technology used in these headphones transmits audio vibrations through the cheekbones directly to the inner ear, bypassing the eardrum. As a result, I experienced clear and vibrant sound without any distortion, even in noisy outdoor environments.
    • The headphones also feature PremiumPitch 2.0+ technology, which enhances bass response and overall audio performance. Whether I was listening to my favorite workout playlist or taking a call on the go, the sound quality remained consistently excellent.
  3. Outstanding Versatility and Durability:
    • One of the standout features of the SHOKZ OpenFit headphones is their versatility. Designed for active lifestyles, these headphones are IP55 rated, making them water-resistant and sweatproof. I never had to worry about rain or sweat damaging the headphones during intense workouts or outdoor activities.
    • Additionally, the headphones boast an impressive battery life of up to 8 hours on a single charge, allowing me to enjoy uninterrupted music or podcasts during long runs or hikes. The included charging case provides an additional 16 hours of battery life, ensuring that the headphones are always ready to go when I am.

Cons – Some things that might improve the SHOKZ OpenFit Headphones:

  1. Limited Noise Isolation:
    • While the open-ear design of the SHOKZ OpenFit headphones allows for enhanced situational awareness, it also means that they provide minimal noise isolation. Ambient sounds such as wind noise or background chatter can still be heard while wearing these headphones, which may be distracting for some users, especially in noisy environments.
    • Although the lack of noise isolation is a deliberate design choice aimed at safety, it may not be ideal for those who prefer complete immersion in their music or audio content.
  2. Less Immersive Listening Experience:
    • While the sound quality of the SHOKZ OpenFit headphones is impressive, it cannot rival the immersive experience provided by traditional over-ear headphones. The open-ear design limits the depth and richness of the audio, particularly in the lower frequencies.
    • Although the headphones feature PremiumPitch 2.0+ technology to enhance bass response, audiophiles may find that they prefer the sound signature of closed-back headphones for critical listening sessions.
  3. Charging Case Design:
    • While the charging case of the SHOKZ OpenFit headphones is compact and convenient for on-the-go use, I found the magnetic lid closure to be somewhat flimsy. There were instances where the lid would pop open accidentally, leaving the headphones vulnerable to damage or loss.
    • Additionally, the micro-USB charging port on the case feels outdated compared to the USB-C ports found on many modern devices. A USB-C charging port would have provided faster charging speeds and greater compatibility with other devices.

Shows everything that is included and comes in the box with the Shokz OpenFit Bluetooth Headphones

Final Thoughts on the SHOKZ OpenFit Headphones:

In conclusion, the SHOKZ OpenFit – Open-Ear True Wireless Bluetooth Headphones offer a revolutionary solution for active individuals seeking comfort, safety, and exceptional sound quality. With their open-ear design, comfortable fit, and durable construction, these headphones are well-suited for outdoor activities such as running, cycling, and hiking. While they may not provide the same level of noise isolation or immersive listening experience as traditional headphones, the benefits of situational awareness and comfort outweigh these drawbacks for many users. Overall, I highly recommend the SHOKZ OpenFit headphones to anyone looking for a versatile and reliable audio solution for their active lifestyle.

Rockin’ Out Wire-Free: A Review of the KTGEE Wireless Earbuds

2024-03-15

ktgee bluetooth 5.3 wireless earbuds in pink shown worn in-ear by happy woman qtooth-review

As a self-proclaimed music addict and someone who craves convenience, wireless earbuds have become my go-to audio accessory. I’ve owned more than a few pairs of Apple Airpods, in both the standard and the Pro versions. They are fantastic and work seamlessly. However, until somebody, somewhere, bothers to make headsets with user replaceable batteries, none of them lasted me beyond two years. And typically less. How are non-replaceable batteries still a thing in almost all of our modern devices? And none of them are recyclable. Are we to treat everything we own as disposable? But until that changes, it can be very costly buying a new pair once every year or two. So, after countless hours spent researching and reading reviews, I finally snagged a pair of the much-talked-about KTGEE Wireless Earbuds, and let me tell you, they’re a game-changer. For as little as 1/8th the cost of the Apple AirPods or AirPods Pro, these little wonders do a heck of a job. Buckle up, music lovers, because I’m about to dive deep into my experience with these little powerhouses of sound.

Specs at a Glance:

  • Bluetooth 5.3 connectivity
  • 40 hours of playtime (with charging case)
  • IPX5 sweatproof rating
  • 13mm dynamic drivers
  • Touch controls for playback, volume, and calls
  • Type-C charging port
  • LED display for battery life
  • Available in 4 colors: white. black, blue and pink. That’s something Aplle may never offer for their earphones!

3 Cons to Consider:

  1. Sound Isolation Isn’t Stellar:ย While the sound quality is impressive for the price,ย these earbuds don’t offer much noise cancellation, especially compare to the Apple AirPods Pro.ย If you crave complete silence while you jam,ย they may be the better choice.ย On noisy commutes or in crowded spaces,ย some ambient sound will seep in.
  2. Comfort Might Not Be for Everyone:ย Much like the Apple AirPods, these come as a one size fits all. Personally,ย I achieved a comfortable seal.ย However,ย for those with smaller or sensitive ears,ย prolonged wear might cause some discomfort.
  3. Microphone Quality Could Be Better:ย During calls,ย the microphone picked up my voice clearly,ย but background noise was also quite noticeable.ย While perfectly usable for quick chats,ย the mic quality might not be ideal for important calls in noisy environments. This is in contrast to even the standard set of AirPods that feature noise cancelling microphones to improve call quality.

3 Pros That Shine:

  1. Battery Life is a Beast:ย 40 hours of playtime is no joke!ย I can go days without needing to recharge the case,ย which is a major win for someone who’s always on the go.ย Plus,ย the handy LED display keeps me informed about the remaining juice. This is much better than the current offering of Apple at any level.
  2. Sound Quality Punches Above Its Weight: Don’t underestimate these little earbuds! The 13mm drivers deliver surprisingly rich and balanced sound, with punchy bass and crisp highs. Whether I’m rocking out to upbeat tracks or indulging in acoustic melodies, the audio is clear and enjoyable.
  3. Convenience King:ย Ditch the tangled wires forever!ย These earbuds connect seamlessly to my phone via Bluetooth 5.3,ย offering a stable and lag-free connection.ย The touch controls are responsive and intuitive,ย allowing me to control music,ย volume,ย and calls without fiddling with my phone. In fact, it these offer even better ready access to more control commands than the Apple earphones.

The Verdict: A Solid Choice for Budget-Conscious Audiophiles

While the KTGEE Wireless Earbuds aren’t perfect, they offer exceptional value for their price. The long battery life, impressive sound quality, and convenient features make them a strong contender for anyone seeking a reliable and affordable wireless listening experience. If you can manage the slight sound leakage and prioritize long-lasting battery and clear audio, these earbuds are definitely worth considering. However, if you require top-notch noise cancellation or crystal-clear microphone quality, you might want to explore other options, including the AirPods.

Bonus Round: Real-World Usage Scenarios and a Special Deal

  • Gym Rat Approved: The sweatproof design held up admirably during my intense workout sessions. No need to worry about sweat ruining these little gems!
  • Commuting companion: Even on a noisy subway, I can still enjoy music because the audio quality is enough to mask most ambient noise
  • Workday Wonder: The intuitive touch controls made multitasking a breeze, allowing me to answer calls and adjust volume without interrupting my workflow.

Overall, the KTGEE Wireless Earbuds have become my go-to audio companions. They’re not without their flaws, but their strengths far outweigh them, making them a solid choice for music lovers on a budget. So, if you’re looking for a wire-free listening experience that won’t break the bank, give these earbuds a try! You might just be surprised by how much you love them. Oh, and they even sell these in a pair of pairs too, in case you want to grab them in different colors.
